We offer you this excellent contribution from Abondance

Google made its latest update to Mobile-First indexing the day before yesterday: the majority of websites are now crawled on their mobile versions. A process that has lasted more than six years!
Mobile indexing for all sites
For six and a half years, Google has been list of mobile number database sites indexed on their desktop versions to their mobile versions. A long process, which was starting to make us doubt that it would end…

But it was confirmed the day before yesterday by John Mueller on Mastodon, after several SEOs were notified of their move to the Mobile First index: the last batch of websites has finally been moved to mobile indexing.

Any site that hasn't yet been moved to the Mobile-First index will remain in the desktop index . According to John Mueller, this means that these sites don't really work on mobile. Fortunately, they will still be crawled, but with the desktop Googlebot. They won't be considered by mobile user agents at all.

Please note: all new sites are indexed by default for mobile indexing.

Long story short
Mobile-first indexing began in 2016 , more than six and a half years ago. In December 2018, Google announced that half of all sites in search results came from mobile indexing. It then announced that all sites would be moved by September 2020. A deadline later pushed back to March 2021… until, finally, it ended in May 2023. Phew!
